Monument Resident Wins Prestigious Broadcast Award

2015 Mar 11

Azusa Pacific University senior Tyler Hill, a resident of Monument, Colorado, won first place in Audio Production for Small Colleges at the Broadcast Education Association's Festival of Media Arts for his KAPU show "Discovery." With more than 1,200 entries in the competition, APU showed its presence.

The BEA is an international academic media organization for educators, students, and professionals. Each year BEA hosts a Festival of Media Arts to celebrate the best faculty and student contributors in the media arts. Winners are announced mid-February and invited to attend the awards recognition ceremony and exposition in Las Vegas on April 12-15, 2015.

"This award is significant for both Tyler and KAPU. BEA is one of the largest associations for universities involved in broadcasting," said Brooke Van Dam, Ph.D., assistant professor of communication studies and program coordinator for journalism. "This marked APU's first year to enter the competition, and to have Tyler win first place speaks of his great vision for the program he created "Discovery, as well as what students are capable of doing here at APU."

Hill's award-winning KAPU episode, called "The Road to Hell, " featured stories about an Israeli goat farmer, founder of a small community-development-focused nonprofit organization in South Africa, and one person's previous connection with a cult that rose from International House of Prayer in Kansas City. "Tyler Hill has this great passion and love for radio. He created a cool, new, highly produced bi-weekly show and he does an exemplary job," said Van Dam. "This award only reiterates what all of us involved with KAPU already knew, "Discovery" is a fantastic program.

In addition to Hill's award, APU students, Peter Hall, Phillip Hall, Brooks Malberg, and Shelby Etcheson, won Honorable Mention in the Student Video Narrative Category for their piece called "The Lost Dutchman."
