APU Student Nathan Mather Receives Fulbright Award

2015 Apr 23

Azusa Pacific University student, Nathan Mather, a Richland, WA, resident, received a prestigious Fulbright Award for the 2015-16 school year.

Mather, who will graduate with a bachelor's degree in psychology from APU on May 2, 2015, will work at a public school in Mexico as an English teaching assistant. Upon his return to the U.S., Mather plans to pursue a doctorate in counseling psychology.

"Living in cities with large Mexican-American populations has inspired me to learn more about the Mexican culture," Mather said. "I hope this unique opportunity will make me a more culturally aware and experienced psychologist."

Mather is one of two APU students to receive a Fulbright Award this year, joining Shannon Kennealy '15. Thousands of students from across the U.S. apply annually for the elite scholarship, yet only about 1,500 are selected. APU boasts 35 students Fulbright scholars since 2003.

The Fulbright Program is an international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government designed to "increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries." The Fulbright Program has provided more than 300,000 participants--chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential--with the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas, and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.
