APU Student Elizabeth Hughes Wins John C. Johnson Award

2015 Apr 30

Biochemistry major Elizabeth Hughes from La Habra, CA, won the John C. Johnson Award at the Beta Beta Beta (TriBeta) National Biological Honor Society at CSU-Monterey Bay.

She researched the interaction between early life stress in adolescence and hyposerotonemia or low levels of circulating serotonin in the blood as a causal factor of anxiety and depression.

Seven APU students presented their original research, alongside TriBeta chapters from all over California. Each presentation was evaluated based on degree of originality of the project, methodology and scope of the data, evidence of background knowledge of the project, and clarity of the presentation in two categories - Organismal/Ecological, and Cellular/Molecular.
